What is Seek?

Seek is a 10-week class about faith and Jesus.

The class is designed to help you if you are:

  • Wondering how faith might play a greater role in your life, or how faith could be more directly relevant to the important issues in your life
  • Curious about Jesus and how Jesus might fit into a faith journey
  • Definitely interested in a life of faith, but consider yourself brand new to it
  • Interested in the idea of prayer or communication with God, but unsure how to pursue it

Background:

Seek actually evolved out of the Alpha course (over 13 years ago) when the Greater Boston Vineyard found that Alpha was failing to meet the questions and needs of the participants. What they discovered in the shadow of places like Harvard and MIT is that these smart people weren't looking for abstract truths about faith, they were looking for real experiential faith. If they couldn't experience God, then why would they want God?

Seek, rather than being a reason-and argument-based course, has developed into a suggestion-and experience-based course. And we've found it to be highly successful in the Cambridge/Boston area. So much so that we've also given it out to 200+ churches and individuals around the country to run and help us develop it. We recently filmed Seek as a DVD series at WGBH studios and  are working on an extended manual, and other additional resources that will make it incredibly accessible and easy for anyone to run. In the meantime, what we have right now is the updated version of the original manual which you can download here:

Potential Seek Leaders

The current Seek manual consists of 4 parts:

  1. A "Welcome to Seek" intro (highly recommended)
  2. A transcript of each of the talks
  3. Leader's Cheat-Sheets (for giving the talks)
  4. Handouts

I highly recommend reading through the intro and the first few talks. This will give you a good feel for the course and whether or not you think it will be a good fit for your church or area.  Most of your questions should be answered in the intro. Dave Schmezler also ran Seek as a sermon series in the summer of 2008 so if you would prefer an audio version you can listen to it here: SEEK AUDIO. Everything is there except for the Holy Spirit Day talks. The first talk starts on June 1st and the last one ends on August 3rd, 2008.

After reading through it, you might decide that the manual is more than enough to try running your own Seek as is. If so, please go for it, and feel free to ask me any questions you might have along the way. If not, no worries, you can always wait for our additional resources.

If you have any additional inquiries or suggestions about Seek please send an email to seek@blueoceanfaith.org.
